The clock on the priory church of St Mary began to show signs of deterioration over the summer of 2021. The outer circular ring of the clock face was showing signs of severe rot, leading to the loosening of the vertical panels.
On examination it became clear that the full outer timber ring was rotten on the northern side.
It was decided in 2022 to investigate the possible costs for a replacement, at which time a number of quotations were sought and received, and fund raising started.
In 2023, it was decided to remove the existing clock face as the deterioration was getting more severe and large parts of the clock face were becoming detached and falling onto the church roof.
So, with the help of a number of villagers, what remained of the clock was removed.
In August 2024, an order was placed with Cumbria Clocks for a replacement for work to be completed early in 2025.
In April 2025 Cumbria Clocks replaced the clock face, and everyone was delighted to be able to see the clock working again. However it soon became apparent that there were issues, as the clock started to lose time, and kept stopping, despite the valiant efforts of local resident Malcolm Wilkinson, who regularly tends and winds the clock. Further inspections took place and it was found that wear and tear on the inner workings of the clock were the cause. Cumbria Clocks will take the clock away for refurbishment in August, and we hope that by the end of the year it will be working once again.
